To accommodate both visiting family and potential renters, our lawyer clients requested we convert an existing detached garage to an accessory dwelling unit. In plan, the project became a simple tripartite organization of living space, sleeping space, and bathroom, while the project's cabanon character emerged in three dimensions, through a palette of contrasting materials — douglas fir and concrete, glass and plaster, black and white tile.

A rhythm of fir-lined clerestory windows recurring in each space established the project's tectonic cadence, framing views of the treetops and the sky.
